Recovery

Cold plunge, lounge, massage. Then the show.

What each of these actually does after a 5K, without the hype.

Why we built a recovery zone into a party

Most races hand you a banana and a foil blanket and send you home. That felt like a waste. You just asked your body to do something, and the twenty minutes after you stop are when a lot of the benefit actually gets locked in.

So every Flock Run has cold plunges, a recovery lounge, and stretch and sport massage tables sitting right between the finish line and the stage. You go from running, to recovering, to dancing.

What a cold plunge actually does

Cold water immersion after exercise is one of the more studied recovery tools, and the honest summary is this: it reliably makes you feel less sore over the next day or two, and the evidence for it dramatically improving performance is a lot thinner than the internet suggests.

Feeling less sore is not nothing. If soreness is the reason you skip your next run, then anything that reduces it is helping you stay consistent, and consistency is the whole game.

One real caveat worth knowing: if your goal is building muscle, plunging immediately after lifting may blunt some of the adaptation. After a 5K, that is not your concern.

If you have a heart condition or circulation issues, talk to your doctor before getting in. Cold water is a real stressor on the body.

The massage and stretch tables

A short post-run stretch and some hands-on work does two things well: it feels good, and it gets you moving normally again faster.

The part people underrate is that lying on a table for ten minutes forces you to actually stop. Most people finish a race, grab a drink, and stay on their feet for three hours. Sitting down deliberately is half the recovery.

What to do in the 24 hours after

Drink more than you think you need, and eat something with protein in it within an hour or two.

Move the next day. A walk beats sitting still. Complete rest usually makes soreness feel worse, not better.

Sleep is the recovery tool that beats everything else on this page, and it is free.

Soreness peaks around 24 to 48 hours after. That is normal. Sharp pain in one specific spot is not, and that is worth getting looked at.

Put it to work

Pick a city and put your name down.

Atlanta filled in ten days. Get on a list and you get 48 hours of presale before anybody else.
